Can't help with any leads but read some of Dr. Doug Scott's work on Custer. He has done some great archaeological work at the Battle of Little Big Horn. I had the opportunity to spend a day with him back in October. Super nice guy and does some very interesting digs. The reads may give you some insight to the man and how he thinks...Custer that is.
