I weigh the item and then multiply by the % of gold in the mix.
24kt-100%
18kt-75%
14kt-58%
12kt-50%
10kt-41%
These aren't exact%s but they are close enough. You aren't going to get 100% value anyway. Frank

10 gram 14k ring would be 10 x .583 = 5.38 grams pure gold. 5.38 divided by 31.1 (that is how many grams to one troy ounce. There are 28 grams to a regular ounce) = .17299 troy ounces of gold. Take that number times the spot price of gold $1664.9 = $288.02 To get the percentage of gold for karat rates take the Karat weight and divide by 24 18/24=.750 14/24=.583 10/24=.417 9/24=.375 Some really old gold will be marked .333 this gold was made before the restrictions on what you could market as gold were passed in the US. Now legally anything below 10k is not considered gold but gold filled.

Hi All; I oftin wonder what the value (Gold) of a ring would be //
Is it correct to asume a 14 carrot ring of 10 grams would be 14/24 x 10 x $value of 1 gram of gold (about $50.00)
or .58x10x50.00=$290.00 (not saying you can get it) ?? Perry

How to Calculate Gold Price By Karat & Weight

First, divide the karat (24; 18; 14; 10) by 24. Now multiply that number by today's gold price per gram. So, if you have a five-gram 10K gold ring, and the current price of gold is $1,600.00 per ounce - or $51.45 per gram ($1,600.00 divided by 31.1 grams), then your 10K gold ring is worth $21.44 per gram ($51.45 x .4167), or $107.20.

10k = 10/24 = .4167
14k = 14/24 = .5833
18k = 18/24 = .750
22k = 22/24 = .9167

If you have five- grams of 14K, and gold is $1,600.00 today, then $1,600 divided by 31.1 would equal $51.45. That figure, multiplied by .5833 (14K) comes out to $30.01 per gram. $30.01 x five- grams equals $150.05.

Some gold buyers use pennyweight (DWT) instead of grams. There are 20- pennyweights per troy ounce. Let’s say you want to sell your gold. You know it weighs 25 grams. You go to a pawn shop to see what they will pay, but they use pennyweights, not grams. Here's how to calculate the conversion: 25 grams of gold x 0.643 = 16.1 pennyweights.

Pennyweights to Grams............divide by 1.55517

Grams to Pennyweights............Multiply by 0.643

Get your modern thirty dollar digital scale out. Set it to Troy ounces. Weigh the ring. The value in dollars = K/24 x Ounces(Troy) x Spot value (Dollars per Ounce(Troy)). Note that the market posts the daily spot value of gold and other precious metals in US Dollars per Ounce Troy. Not the other kind of ounce. So, you get a massive gold ring, no stones. It is stamped 18K. It weights 0.874 Troy Ounces. So, 18/24 x 0.874 x $1680/Ounce(Troy) (today's gold spot price, check it out) = $1101.00 Cha Ching! Now, if your scale is old and crappy, and you can only weigh it in Avoirdupois Ounces (the normal ounce that we use for ounces, pounds, etc), then convert as follows: K/24 x Ounces (Avoirdupois) x 0.911458333 x Spot value. 1 Ounce Avoirdupois = 0.911 Ounce Troy. Is your scale really old and crappy and only shows grams? Forumla: (Grams x 0.03215) x 0.911458333 x K/24 x spot. Example, you dig a thin 10K band, it weighs 3.8 grams. 3.8 x 0.03215 x 0.9114833 x 10/24 x 1680. 78 bucks. Cha Ching!

Note on the scale: You can get the digital scale at Harbor Freight for $14.99. If you can find there sail flier, they usually have them in the store, it is on sale for $9.99 now. Hope this helps, Frank
