Well, I have never eaten a snake, But I have eaten smoked eel and it taste like crab meat. Maybe you have to smoke the rattlers to get a good flavor. PS, is all that poison just confined to the head? Frank...

There are a number of ways you might be able to try , 1.put cinnamon oil on a cloth and throw it in there with them(they hate anything with a strong smell. They use their Jacobson's organ which is a smell receptor. 2.throw some sulphur in. 3. Try "liquid fence spray repellant". 4. Throw some kingsnakes or coachwhips in with them, they will eat the rattlers.

Here's a way to do it,on the NatGeo channel, they have a show where the round up Rattle snakes and they get them out of their holes by spraying gasoline on them, via a pump up sprayer.

Those snakes are in their hibernaculum, where they spend the winter for the very reasons you mention. They can avoid extreme temps. There is no reason to kill those snakes, and most of your snake bite victims out there get bit because they are trying to f*** with a snake that just wants to be left alone. If you really want to move those snakes, without killing them or injuring them, which gasoline and all the other methods will do, contact your local herp society. Phoenix Herpetological Society Get a hold of the president, chances are s/he will know a crazy member that is good at safely handling rattlesnakes and that will have a good time playing with those rattlesnakes while you are busy digging. This person or persons might just do it for fun because, believe it or not, some of us go looking for snakes on purpose and all we take is a photo. Barring that offer to pay him. If you're willing to risk that hike and being killed by snake bite, $100 doesn't seem like that big of a downpayment on the Beale Treasure or whatever you're looking for.

So basically its a wild goose chase that you are not positive anything is in the cave because the only way you can be positive is if you dig it. Then I say leave the snakes to their Den, You would probably just be killing a lot of snakes for no real reason, just my opinion. But to each his own. If it is proven that there is something there that you know of then humanely remove the snakes then dig away, best of luck. Please Video you might make more money from selling video to When Animals Attack.

In effect, all cache hunts are wild goose chases. The only way to prove something is there is to see it after it has been dug up. Frank...
