Some yards are excavated even in the old days. May have had the soil mover around some? Or it may not hold anything ...

I get skunked on 2 out of three old yards lately. Usually dirt's been moved around or backfilled over the years. Plus, the possibility that the yard has been detected at least once, if not several times in the past, regardless of the homeowner's remark that "it's never been detected". Metal detecting is not a new activity and detectors have been in use for close to 50 years.

I watch for sunken ground at sidewalk edges and trees. The bigger the difference the older and untouched the yard. But not always a great indicator.
