Mason jars advice

I came across a cellar in the woods and it has over a hundred canning jars still full with zinc lids... there about a mile deep in the woods I dont wanna have to lug them out unless somebody wanted them all...I will get pics today of them..

That's a very nice collection. My collection is only around 200 jars. Unique is what you seek. Although the Amish around here will pay a buck a piece for common ones to use. The best ones aren't common. If I were going to carry them a mile, my first choice would be uncommon ones. Color, size, lid/closure type would be what I would look for first.

Very popular down here in Tennessee. Blue ones bring more than clear. I have seen a very few that are light Brown and those bring a premium. Odd sizes as well. #13 on the underside of the lid and on the bottom of the jars jacks the price way up. The old story with that is that the old time moonshiners thought the 13 jars were bad luck and broke them all. Doubtful there's any truth to it but everyone loves a good story and so they have become valuable. Did you happen to see this guy out there near that cellar hole ?

I came across some jars that were still full once.Whoever did the canning knew their business.The baked beans still smelled pretty good as did the stewed tomatos.

Not to hijack the thread...but i need info from the pros!!!...I'm not a jar collector but I do have a pair of Ball jars with the error "PEPFECT". The numbers on the bottom tell me that they came from different molds. Are these error jars common?? I collect mainly local dairy and soda bottles, but anything with an embossed error is a keeper too.

Are pint or half pint jars more or less desirable/rare? I found one in perfect condition in an old cellar hole among many other quart jars with zinc lids. The quarts glass has the blue tint but the pint was clear. I have pictures if anyone needs to see it. Also can finding so many of these zinc lided jars date this cellar hole? Sorry Bass, I don't mean to steal your thread here but "Mason Jar Advice" is a great title for many questions and there seems to be several knowledgeable folks here so I couldn't resist.

Here is my favorite. Seriously though, anyone with a large number of these type jars really needs good reference books to look them up in. I don't collect them and am not an expert but I like to look at the huge variety of different styles and sizes at the local flea markets, auctions, etc. and the prices are all over the place. Common names are Mason, Atlas, Lightning & Ball. Clear seem to be the most common but I have seen Blue, Brown & Green as well.
