This video shows how-to turn a $25 home depot "Ames 16in drain spade" into an awesome detecting shovel.
After watching this I might just make one lol

Well my short spade had way too much flex in the woods.
I was afraid it was going to break in the rocky root infested areas.

So my thought was to get a thick drain spade cheap and customize it.
If I hadn't just bought the 5x8 DD coil for my AT Pro I'd have enough cash for a decent dig shovel.
So I have to get a cheap "for now" shovel while I save up lol

I am not suggesting this is top notch, just a budget alternative

I found a good site where they are about $49-52 Sampson T-Handle / Serrated Edge

Now I need to figure out what blade type will suit me best.
I need something that can do local parks and handle rocks and roots in the wooded cellar hole areas too
I'm thinking T-handle so for long hikes to the site I can attach to belt or backpack

Without a doubt a Sampson T handle with serated blade. Even my wife loves it and it is her go to tool for planting flowers. If she hasn't broke it yet neither will you.

I would like to see the Sampson with a 1" longer blade, and a sharpened, rounded tip. I find that when digging in rooty areas, the pointy tip just glances off of roots, while my other shovel with the flatter, shallow-radius tip will cut right through the roots with some pressure from my bloated lethargic endomorphic torso.

    Thanks for the replies everyone

I'm torn between the 31 Sampson and th relic pro model with serrated edge.
There is a lot of roots in my area and I think the wide curved tip may give me an advantage.
Once I convince the wife ill have to make the hard choice between the 2 models lol

I gave in and ordered a Lesche Sampson 31 t-handle serrated shovel
    Cost me $68.90 with shipping.
Now I have to see how long 2 day priority is lol (hopefully only 2 days)
Sunday or Monday I have a guest coming from Florida to go detecting and I hope it will arrive in time lol
