I have a question I've been meaning to ask for a long time.
Compared to U.S. Large Cents it seems the ratio of half cents are a lot higher in the Southern areas of the east coast... Seems like half cents are found more often in the mid Atlantic and southern U.S. Compared to New England. These have just been my ovservations of what other people have found... what do you guys think? Are half cents more prevalent South of the Mason Dixon?

My 'knee jerk'response is that snow and 'tundra-like' conditions occur more in New England than in the southern US, therefore, less TH-ers are hunting in the winter months and find fewer coins--of all denominations.
Don.....

I don't think it is really true. I have found several and have friends who have found several. These were all found before the internet and most were English and well toasted. One of my buddies found one in MA last fall. I don't think one can judge by what shows up on the forums, there are a huge amount of hunters that do not participate in online activities. There was also a lot of stuff dug up before the forums existed. We may get less time to hunt in the northeast, but there was a lot of early settlement here and there have been may great finds here due to that fact.

I've never heard of a half cent being found in CA. Been some large cents found here (very few), but never heard of half cents found out here.

In my two years of detecting in Rhode Island, I've found six large cents and zero half cents.

Have you ever seen anything you could buy for a Half Cent in New England, even in the late 1700's to mid 1800's? Just saying!!:icon_scratch::dontknow:

My ratio in northeast Pa is 14 or 15 to 1 for the last 2 1/2 years.

I'm in NH and find large cents and halfpennies (Equal to a half cent in size) but not a single half cent of farthing.
