If your looking for iron items go for it. Use a stout rope as you could lose the magnet to an anchor.

I did that a lot a a kid. I went to the local pier. My haul was always tackle boxes, knifes, poles, crab nets, and a few times 3' long bolts and Large nuts that had fallen out of the pier!

Any steel or iron object in an ocean environment will most likely be roached...what's the benefit?

Use your MD unit and find worthwhile objects with less effort...

I will be on the Delaware coast and Me and my buddy's have had great luck on the sand and shallow water finding Inert training bombs, fuzes, and ship spikes, Back after the war the military dumped TONS of things off shore and some has washed up. If you want a great fun place to search try the Fenwick Island area! A lot of it is very crusty but still can worth while. Thanks for the comments and I am exited to try it a little.

I think it could work around a pier and far out from the waves breaking. Anything near shore is going to be buried under 3 feet of sand (well, here in Fl anyway, maybe not up north on the rocky coasts)
