Tobacco Tins

Still new to the detecting world and I have a question.


I was detecting a permission and I was digging around some rocks and I dug up 3 smashed metal "boxes". I tried to clean them up just to see if I could id them. I showed them to the home owners, neither of them knew. However, a few weeks latter I was watching one of the youtube channels, Dirt Fishing America aka Dr.Tones, and he dug a tobacco tin. He said something like "well that at least is the right time period'. It look almost exactly like what I had dug up. I have done some google searches on tobacco tins and I could not find a good resource on them. A search for tobacco tins on Tnet didn't seem to find anything either.

Questions:

1. Where is a good place to gain some knowledge on the subject?
2. If those were tins, would it be worth going back. (or are they just not that old)
-reality is I'll probably go back anyway because DIG IT ALL!

don't know, but as a kid, I used those to carry fish hooks, split shot, 22 shells and whatever else would fit in them.

Never spent much time researching them. They've been around forever & are so common you can barely give them away even with the labels in great condition. The only way I could turn a buck on them was to make shadowboxes with one and a few other relics in them.

I'm not sure about others here but all they tell me is there was activity in the area at one time. Take a walk through some antique stores get the brand names off of some of theirs and try googling the brand names, or chewing tobacco.

yes Certain ones can be very Valuable.
I've pulled a few out of Mud over the Years , lost most likely by Fishermen.



I was told the Edgeworth would be the Most Valuable.
sort of Figures, considering it was almost all gone.
Had to cut & frame it. if they were right on value, I don't know.



They were also used as dirtlooter says. for carrying things.

My one and only Coin Cache was apparently Buried in one



there were 3 halfs. But I dug one of them on a different Day,
so it didn't make the photo

Man! You guys got a good market back there! Was at an antique store that will trade with me and remembered (a small miracle) to look at the tins (3) they had. One of them has been there so long the writing on the price tag has almost faded to nothing. Bummer! They told me my other favorite antique store closed and they were just throwing stuff in the trash out back. Wish I'd known! Would've taken the trailer & loaded the dumpster on it! It'd been worth listening to the wife *****ing "Where are you gonna put all that stuff!?!?!?"
