Hey folks!

Here's one for you, what kind of ratio do you usually get of big silver (quarters and larger) to small silver (dime and smaller) over the course of any given year? I think I'm experiencing a bit of an anomaly but I've got 1 silver quarter, 9 silver dimes, and 2 war nickels so far this year.

I suppose your results probably depend a lot on the kinds of sites you hunt. Since I'm doing a lot of little city lots and sidewalk strips those little silvers are much more likely to have gone unnoticed when dropped. It'd be hard for a half dollar not to catch someone's eye while they walked down the sidewalk.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

I spend a lot of time at colonial sites, so I don't find too many silver coins. Money was tight back then, I guess. Anyway, here's what I've found this year and my totals in 4 years of detecting.

2017: 2 quarters, 3 dimes, 2 war nickels and 1 half dime.

2014 to 2017: 1 half dollar, 8 quarters, 25 dimes, 1 half dime, 4 war nickels. I've also found 3 silver half reales from the 1700's.

You have to realize that anyone with a $100 metal detector can locate big silver coins. It's finding the little silver coins that separates the pros from the amateurs in metal detecting...

I'm about the same as far as dimes to quarters....10 to 1, and have only found 1 half in 3 years....just easier for a smaller coin to go unnoticed than a larger half I suppose....smaller holes in pockets....

My ratios vary depending on the site. At public parks; a little over 25 to 1 ratio of silver dimes to silver quarters. On private property that was (probably) never hunted before, it's much better. Way back in the 1970's, hunting some of the same parks that I do now: 3.5 to 1 ratio of silver dimes to quarters.

This is a good thread. For my first year I have found 3 silver quarters, 7 silver dimes and 3 silver Nickles. I happy but I thought going in that I would find more quarters than dimes...being larger and all. Good topic

For 2017, I've found 1 silver dollar, 2 silver Washington quarters, 2 Mercs, 4 Rosies. So that puts me at a 3:6 (or 1:2) ratio. For how much I have hunted, I'd like to have found more silver this year, but it's been limited for me. Hopefully will finish strong; fall and winter are coming!

All I can say about the 70's compared to today is looking back to those days it was like shooting fish in a barrel.:laughing7:

Show off!!! Lol...that is freaking awesome man....what detector do you use or your go to machine? Congrats

I primarily swing the F75LTD. Pulling silvers, it's more about the location than the machine. The choice of coils also plays into the success.

This is a great thread, I was wondering the same thing not too long ago and only found one other thread on the topic on another site. This is my 1st season detecting and right now I am at 6 quarters to 17 dimes.

And if you care to know the types they are...
Quarters: 2 Barber, 1 SLQ, 3 Washington
Dimes: 8 Barber, 4 mercs, 5 rosies

Lifetime totals of hunts I have been on since 2013, including three silvers (two dimes and one nickel) that were found by family members. For some reason war nickels seem to be fairly common around here. I haven't found much silver though, compared to many of you guys. My lifetime silver totals are probably equal to one decent hunt for some of you guys. My colonial silver to copper ratio is around 1:15.

Only little silvers right now.

War Nickels: 2 (1943P, 1945D)
Half Reals: 1 (1779)
Dimes: 3 (Seated, Barber, Merc)
One Reals/Colonial Sixpences: 1 (worn flat)
Quarters: 0
Halves: 0
Silver Dollars: 0

Cool thread.

I have been detecting since 2014. Almost all of my first year was modern schools and parks.

2014 - 1 Quarter / 12 Dimes

2015 - 3 Halves, 4 quarters / 20 dimes, 3 War Nickels

2016 - 1 silver dollar, 3 quarters / 29 dimes, 4 war nickels, 1 half dime

2017 - 2 halves, 5 Quarters, 1 foreign (size of quarter) / 58 dimes, 6 war nickels, 1 half dime

My 2017 numbers are a little skewed by that 20 Mercury dime spill I found.

My first year was also all modern hunted out schools and parks, I got one barber dime from a pocket spill that year, in my first week, and nothing else after. No cool relics even that year. Then in late 2013 I bottle dug for two months and got over 100 late 1800's bottles from my backyard. After that I got bored at a school from the 1990's, went off into the woods behind it and found a colonial button. Since then I haven't hit another school or park, I have been hooked on relic hunting.
