Detecting Maine

May be heading up to Maine this spring, just wondering about accessibility to places to hunt and how stringent the regulation's are.

Uhhh, last I checked ....... Maine is a big state Care to be a bit more specific ? There are scores of different entities/types of land: Federal, state, county, cities, and private. And even WITHIN each of those different types, are sub-types. Eg.: not all federal land is NPS. Not all state land is "state park" land. Not all county land is "county park" land, etc... That's why you can't lump all land together and say, for example: All federal land, or all state land is a no-go.

And then to add more confusion to it: You might have a spot in mind (a city or county park, for example), and you might knock yourself silly satisfying yourself that there are no rules or laws that say "no metal detecting". But then you could worry yourself silly wondering if ancillary language applies ? Eg.: "alter/deface" or "harvest/remove" or "cultural heritage", etc.... You can never 100% guarantee no gripes from anyone.

So my rule of thumb when traveling around to new territory, is just to avoid obvious historic sensitive monuments. No need to over-think things. If you are still skittish, then the laws/rules of any public place you go are no secret. Like for parks, the rules can be looked up (city website, etc...): Dogs on leash, no fireworks, etc.... If you see nothing that says "no metal detectors", then presto, it's not prohibited.
