Could this be ancient or just very old? Pre-Col or Native American?

Nothing definitive will come from this post since all you have to go on are these pictures but I would like some opinions.
The reason I am posting here instead of the 'what is it' forum is because I know what it is, a small pot/kettle.
I found this piece recently and it has many of the qualities that suggest it is very very old but I won't disclose how or where it was found, (yet) because doing so tends to infuence public opinion.
The piece measures 5"x5" so, not a large piece.
Thank you in advance and all opinions will be considered and respected.

I forgot to mention that this item is on eBay right now so if anyone discovers it there they will know it is my item. I want opinions from the members here because I am seriously considering pulling this auction depending on responses here.

How did you arrive at the notion that it was sold at Sears?

I don't think it's NA, historic or prehistoric. That bottom is kind of interesting. You might look into the type glazes used, if someone knows about those, and that could help dating it.

I think just the sheer number of colours (7) may be an indicator that its not that old. The bottom may be from standing on sand when it was fired. Interior looks like it was formed on a wheel.....not built up in layers by hand. Just my opinion.

Your on the right track, wheel thrown, and the bottom is from where a wire or string cut it off the wheel and it was never properly trimmed. Not terribly old in my opinion.

I agree with Chub that the piece was thrown on a wheel but that doesn't shed any particular light on its age. The slow wheel (older version of the throwing wheel) has been around for something like 5000 years. The bottom was cut from the slug of clay from which the pot was made but was not smoothed. As for the texture of the bottom, that could result from being fired in a ground-based kiln or may simply be rough cut.

A quick trip to a museum that deals in cultural history might be a good place to begin identifying the piece.
