Would you believe I have 5 pounds of sand baking in the oven?

Actually, I do. It's in one of the blue and black enameled baking pans. I am heating a new batch of Flint Ridge, Ohio flint I found yesterday. It's supposed to bring out the colors. The flint is buried in the sand to even out the temperature so it won't crack. I'll let you know!

LONG trip!

I'm interested in how the treatment works.

Did you happen to get pics previous to heating the flint?

I'm having a small filet mignon sauteed with mushrooms. Here are some pics of the just washed but not scrubbed pieces the Indians made use of, so no heat treating for these. Flakes made into little tiny aboriginal razor knives, some roundish knives, end scrapers and a few colorful waste flakes in the first picture and the second has larger knives, spalls, preforms, all that cool stuff. Also the two odd pieces that stand out are broken hammerstones. IMG_1251.JPG IMG_1252.jpg IMG_1254.jpg

You probably won't get much change, color or gloss, until you get up around 550°F. The real high grade FR chalcedony will blow up if you put much heat on it. Opaque types do better in the cooker. Gary

I got it up to about 500. It changed color on the outside, but I haven't been home enough to start whacking on it yet.
