Considering how easy it to fake at least you know that one was altered from the get go. Pennies are used by various people to test for sulfur which also tones them.

I like your cents. Unless a coin is slabbed by a major company, or I find it, I won't touch the rainbows. Except this one. Too many fakes.Click image for larger version.

I liked those toned coins until I found out they are easy to make. So, I tried it myself. It is pretty easy. Unless you can tell real from fake, don't bother. Here's my attempts. Gary

A2coins, I just got a cleaned Indian. Detail is great. I'll set it out and forget where I put it so the sun can do its work.

You can also tone Lincoln Cents by placing them in a bowl of mixed water and Dawn dishwashing liquid for a short time. Rinse with freshwater, remove them, then pat dry with a soft towel and then let air dry. You will see that they have already taken on some bluish, magenta and purplish hues (toning). If then placed on a window sill where they can get some sunlight, they will tone even further. Some hand soaps will do the same thing but the color toning is somewhat different with each.

I collect the Cobalt and Gun Metal toned Proof Jefferson Nickels. They are usually cheap and not that hard to find in fairly high Proof grades. They may not be worth a lot now but sometime down the road, they will.

I have never personally seen the attraction of toned coins. I have a few and I don't like them. Call me strange, I guess.

America was founded by tough hell-raisers. Rugged citizens who evaded taxes, spoke strongly against tyranny, grew tobacco, brewed beer, distilled spirits, and smuggled weapons. And it will be saved by those same types of citizens.
