We had our second bear around the place (that we have seen). Didn't have any time to get a pic, they sometimes are pretty skiddish. the first one was just a small cub, we never saw the sow. this one was the normal for this time of the year, juvenile male that has been kicked out. Time to quit the bird feeders and keep the bird feed put up securely in the locked up garage. This is actually a false sense of security as a big bear doesn't care about such trivial inconveniences...they make a way inside if they want to.

These young teenage males are pretty darn hungry and desperate for food as they try to exist on their own for the first time. Anything to fill their stomach will do and I mean anything. I grew up around bears, the wife has seen them numerous times over the years but not so close and in your yard. The cat immediately gets on top of the roof of our two story log house and stays there until they are gone. The young males are funny to watch, they are like clowns as they try to figure out how to get to something to eat. They can be dainty or they can act like starving bears and just barrel in. We have had excessive rain this year and this has affected many things in nature so it can be a very busy bear summer this year. Pretty, cute and still a wild dangerous animal that is trying to survive.

My across the street neighbor has had 2 black bears hanging out
behind his place; meaning there about 125 yds. from my front door.

Says they're both about 150 lbs., so not large bears, but still a
concern nonetheless.

Michigan is loaded with black bears, they just don't hang
around much in the cities. You can sleep well... moose.gif

I like being up at night, and it's not unusual for me to take a
walk up and down the road at 3am. Good thing is, my cat Scruff
always walks along just ahead of me. Since I'm pretty much deaf,
he lets me know if anything is even slightly out of the ordinary. I
can hear dogs barking though, and if there was a bear in the area
they'd be raising holy hell.

They haven't been around for a few days, so hopefully they've
found their way back into the woods; I sure didn't want to be
in a position that would force me to kill one. If they're smart enough,
they'll head into the mountains and get fat on berries, and if they can
avoid the grizzlies they might have a chance of growing up.

For years, Arkansas was known as the Bear State and for good reason. Bears are pretty common around here, just the way it is but occasionally we get a troublesome one or an aggressive one. My father's Indian name is basically, "One Who Talks to Bear." If you have ever watched a bear actually eat blackberries, it is very awesome. They use the side of their tongue to pick them, muscle control of the their tongue is crazy.
