better yet
forget the header box....
the design is 40 years old. it was invented by the Keene boys, father and that
was because he ran into some clay layers and thought that the stuff need to
be busted up,. but really, it just mixed the layers of strata that all ready separated
in the hose, give the sluice little time to separate it all out again.

Skip the header just add a large rubber 'mud' flap.. the heaver concentrates
that stratify in the hose,. stay separated, then once they hit the sluice they
have a better chance of getting trapped in the riffles, before it goes out the
end of the box.

look at all the new dredge designs, no headers!

Nothing wrong with a header box it breaks things up crashing them around but not necessary, not just for clay but also for areas with highly mineralized material that is rusted together .

A grizzly with matting under it would work followed by a long skid type plate, riffle selection is important and the fall of the box as is material used under riffles, but this all depends too on type of gold that's there. Also water flow another important factor :tongue3:

Yer forget a crasher header box. Try this for a simple fix. I used an old road works cone to make a flare for my 4" dredge & I have done the same thing for my 2". Which is what you want to do.

Or you could make a wooden one like this that I made for my 2" dredge. I used an old fridge tray as the classifier. Works bloody great.

Happy golding
