Here are two pics of caliche, calcium carbonate. Almost as hard as cement! The first is a large piece sticking out of the soil. If you find large sheets of this, unbrocken, you KNOW no one has been underneath it. Also sweep or vacuum the top of it for possible gold flour. The rock in my hand shows the left side coated with caliche. TTC

I once used my Dewalt Cordless Hammer drill and a 14"x 3/4 " concrete bit and drilled a hole to start breaking through some 7" thick chliche in the Cajon Pass.
I need to go back there some day and finish that dig. I only made a hole big enough for my foot to fit in.:goldpan:
