You have to classify to the same size before you pan. 20 mesh (per inch) 50 and 70 mesh is what i use.
you should only do a few tablespoons of the fine stuff at a time.
you need one of these:

Pan your black sands away from the gold then suck it up with the small water tweezers, drop it into a vial. Repeat until your pan is clean. Repeat until you have no dirt left :).
Then take your vial, dump it in your cleanup pan (some like blue), there will inevitably be some smaller black pieces or whatever, just use the water tweezers to clen out your take, gently blow the black sand / heavies away from your gold, start snuffing the clean gold up and replace into the vial.

Be sure to keep your dirt as you will surely get better at panning and you never know what you will find the second time around ;)
