Californian drought reveals goldmine for hopeful holidaymakers

As California struggles through the third year of its worst drought for more than a century, for some it is a golden opportunity to make extra money.

Low water levels in creeks and rivers have exposed new areas for amateur prospectors to try their luck digging for gold.

BBC Mundo's Jaime Gonzalez spent a day with some of them.

I'm one that found gold in new areas because of low water.
My Claim on a small creek went dry early so I joined a friend on the river exploring new places along the bank.
The river has been dredged in the past but the bank was virgin. We used my high banker and did very well.

Here's hoping for low water next year (I know CA needs the water)

In California,the main thing to keep in mind is that you can't just pan or prospect anywhere you please.

It's that way everywhere, Dave. This is the "King's" land, and poachers will be imprisoned. It seems that when a prospector finds good color or the promise of it, the feds find a way to close it off or regulate it so only wealthy mining companies can pass environmental muster. It becomes a wilderness study area, or a recreation area, or a monument or park. Or, some green weenie decides a tortoise may be in danger of extinction from a dry washer. It's always something with the "king". I guess freedom is a relative term these days.
