Where to prospect for gold

I'm in North Charleston and would like to know where I can to prospect for gold without getting into trouble by trespassing or being on someone else's claim. I just want to go for a weekend and have some fun. I've never done it and want to try. Any suggestions?

I'd join either a local group or something like the GPAA/LMDA you get a guide to all the mining area's for all the states info, and a pan plus a hat I know eeeewe being a member you can dig on any of their claims check'em out.
