Was thinking of some of the places on my bucket list I want to go to soon and the thought of using a Mountain bike popped into my head. There are a few places that have decent trails to them and can totally be accessed by bike. By adding a trailer, I can easily get my Drywasher, MD and tools and buckets back into these places.
I have the bike and trailer already so it will be tried.
But the Fat bikes might fit the bill over my normal bike.
Plus I would want to convert the bike to electric which would be gold in itself.

So anyone done this and if so, How did it work for you?
Any pictures or your setup?

And the Dirtbike has been done myself as well with just a detector.
I want one of these loaded with my drywasher and gear and hit the Randsburg area hard!!
This would be a desert prospecting animal.
Pack a tent and stuff too, and you're good for an overnighter or two.

That one is made by moto-mule moto-mule dual sport cargo trailer I think its around $900, I can't justify that price im sorry its very nifty but very basic you could probably build it with the same parts for around $100-200 with the right tools and know how.

Here is another one by trailtail that is only $750 Trailtail™ - Order Now

I plan on getting everything from ebay and fabbing the rest.. Well thats the plan at least we will see what happens with the pile of to dos I have before next season. :laughing7:

I need a trailer for my orange one. Riding with a backpack works but it limits me to sampling and detecting, for the most part.

Thats what I want next, I have my crf450 listed on CL right now.. Going to upgrade to a plated ktm or a side by side cant quite make up my mind lol..

The EXC's are so nice! I went with the 350 since I like tight, technical trails. My last bike was a WR250F and I needed a plate to access the trails in my area. The KTM is better in every way. And lighter.

Thanks for the info on the trailers. You're right...they seem overpriced.

A mountain bike is a great idea for many places. You can also load it up like a mule and push it, rather than having heavy stuff on your back. It proved effective for the VC on the mountain paths of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Also, it is a good idea to hide it and lock it up when you wander away, so it is still there when you get back.

Awesome thread ! Subscribed.
I just thought the same thing, and ordered me an electric cruser style, but has pretty fat tires, 2.something. and mid-drive using the bikes gears is "supposed" to handle any hill ? We'll soon see.
Should be here in about a week, although next season is some way off. Can't wait to get it, I mostly detect for relics, but prospect some, and this is going to extend my range considerably. An extra battery is only about 5 more pounds. I probably won't go trailer, but a rear rack (at least) for for sure.

Yes. I have done similar. I also modified a A frame exercise frame to run a water pump. I modified a washing machine pump and can deliver a flow rate of 800 to 1000 GPH. Can I pump for a hour? No, not without a defibrillator. And for that, I can swap out the pump for a generator which will deliver 250W at 14V regulated to charge car batteries, operate radios (ham) and charge my defibrillator. Most everything fits in the black container which also acts am my hi banker water base. Can also use foot valve and draw from local stream (reduced volume to 700 GPH). The trailer folds up for storage and is very light.
This is a 2 person operation. One to feed and tend the sluice or wash plant and the other to pump on the bike. The tender can also supply the pumper with refreshments of his choice.

This project started as a generator for ham use. Every year there is Field Day where clubs all over the US operate off the grid for 24 hours and get special points for battery/generator/ solar operation. I was able to supply power for a 100 watt HF radio station quite easily. The gold came into play. But with the California rules, many places do not allow motorized mining. that is where this comes in.
Future projects include a mini rock crusher and maybe a small air compressor. Drink blenders are all over the place already and I don't need to go there.

AWESOME ! KR6 !!

Man only 3 posts, you've got a good one here. I like it, genus is the word that comes to my mind.
With that much weight you may think of electrifying the transporter...in case you're tired at the end of the day.

Electric has come a long way too.
The Mid Frame motors have some serious hill climbing ability yet not weighing that much more.

They come as kits and you can install them yourself to many types of bikes.

Or these guys:
Haibike

Cool stuff out there indeed, that we may be able to utilize to our benefit.
The best thing about the E bike is the Stealth of it.
No - no wilderness, but more access than the Motorcycle for sure.

Cheers

I don't know about bikes but beside my portable Coleman grill on wheels, this off road cart is the best to haul gear and labor.....
