Been to Gardiner MT many times to visit friends, right at the north entrance to Yellowstone. We used to go up to Jardine, about 6 miles from town and pan in Bear Creek. There is an old abandoned gold mine there and you can't miss it. Some of the original structures are still standing but practically all of everything you lay eyes on is private property and they don't much care for trespassers. There are a few places you can access the creek but it's a hike down and back up from the road. Bear Creek is named for a reason, so I can't stress enough to be aware of your surroundings and carry bear spray because you are in serious grizzly country. Make noise too if you decide to hike in so you don't surprise a bear up close. Been there, done that and you realize right quick who's at the top of the food chain!

Some will say to wear little bells tied on your shoes so you jingle when you walk, along with carrying the bear spray. Do you know how to tell bear scat? It has little bells in it and smells like bear spray.

    Seriously though, enjoy the trip.

I never tire of Highway 80.

Follows so closely the route of the pioneers and the transcontinental railroad.

Have a safe and fun journey!

Bells don't work at all! Bears are listening for natural sounds like sticks breaking, not Santa Claus!
