Ireland's Supreme Court has ruled that bread sold by the fast food chain Subway contains so much sugar that it cannot be legally defined as bread.
The ruling came in a tax dispute brought by Bookfinders Ltd., an Irish Subway franchisee, which argued that some of its takeaway products — including teas, coffees and heated sandwiches — were not liable for value-added tax.
A panel of judges rejected the appeal Tuesday, ruling that the bread sold by Subway contains too much sugar to be categorized as a "staple food," which is not taxed.
"There is no dispute that the bread supplied by Subway in its heated sandwiches has a sugar content of 10 per cent of the weight of the flour included in the dough, and thus exceeds the 2 per cent specified," the judgment read.
The law makes a distinction between "bread as a staple food" and other baked goods "which are, or approach, confectionery or fancy baked goods," the judgment said.

Now it's just "nuggets". No mention of, or apparent existence of chicken. I stopped eating Arby's years ago, when I noticed bubbles in the "roast beef", like swiss cheese, only the round holes were tiny, like 2-3 mm. I've only eaten fast food once in the last 7 or 8 months.

If you pass on fast food, and instead buy frozen dinners, or prepared entrees, you're not getting anything better. Unless you're talking frozen pizza. Frozen pizza is a wholesome, balanced food, ready in 20 minutes.

We buy a frozen wood oven pizza that is all organic, then add all our own toppings. Set the oven on the pizza setting and it does a great version of anything one can buy in the upscale pizza joints. Still on the things to do in life is to make a dough and do our own. Know some folk that bought their own outdoor wood oven pizza oven-they do the bread the next morning with the remaining heat. But a $6k it's tad out there in the price range for us at this time in life.
Then many will say that's a crazy price to pay-never! But have no issue in dropping that on a sandy beach get-away for a week. So it all depends where one puts the priorities in life-good food that will keep the body healthy or just eat to sustain life and rely on the pills to keep it running.

Back about a decade ago I use to get the chicken sub.
Till one day I got a great taste of yuk!
It was a chemical taste that still rents space in the grey matter.
No problem giving them the boot.
Very seldom do we eat even at a restaurant.
Can't beat the menu at home it seems.

I still like Subway when I need to grab a quick bite, but for real sustenance nothing tops free-range organic.

There's a good side to the organic free range version of chicken. I just looked up the requirements of "Free range"

Free-range

  • Birds must have access to an outdoor area for at least six hours each day.
  • Each hen must have at least 2 square feet (288 square inches) of outdoor space.
  • The outdoor space doesn't need to have any living vegetation.

Now my chickens have over 3000sq ft each in a tree covered area. Still they want to roam freely around the rest of the yard.
The above "free Range" standards are still based factory produced birds-no real quality to the bird.

Free range-eat what ever-when ever - lots of range to peck away to their hearts content.

This explains why my daughter likes the ham & cheese sub on whole wheat so much... because of the sugar! :laughing7:

Well I just figured if the bread has that much sugar in it, it could be considered a donut if its not really bread !! So we end up with fake chicken on bread that has so much sugar in it that it taste like a donut !!

As long as it has butter on it, it's fine with me. Sugar is good too. Probably better than artificial sweeteners. I haven't eaten out, including take out hardly at all since March. But I about ruined my throat with cooking a large onion in a pot roast! Thing caused the reflux to go into overdrive. It will take at least a week to settle down. But it was good!

Good on'ya! Know the risks and choose to eat it anyway.....:occasion14:

Having Meniere's disease, there are some things I just can't have any
more as they trigger vertigo attacks. Caffeine and alcohol were the
biggest ones, and I've had neither since 2007. In their case, "the cheese
ain't worth the squeeze"..meaning, I'd rather walk through hell than risk
having a vertigo attack.

Salt is another issue, but I love the stuff. It doesn't cause vertigo,
but it can crank up the volume of the tinnitus to almost unbearable
levels.

BUT, most times I make the choice to live with the noise and
eat it anyway... eating-02.gif

There's being alive, and then there's livin'.... moose.gif

Back in the late 80s I was suffering from reflux-looked at water and it would go into hyperdrive it seemed. Tests-specialist-results was the future candidate for Esophageal cancer because of the burning/irritation.
Operation-yr of recovery-47lb weight loss in 12 days post operation. (Note not a heavy) so now I resemble a string bean.
Still had heartburn-clock ahead to the early 2000's and the inhibitors were the wonder drug-little pill-magic could gobble down anything and nothing-result depleted the body of iron-off those terrible things-heartburn again.
Finally the Naturopath just said 1/4 tsp non-alum baking soda in a tea cup warm water stir-burp-carry on.
Been well over a decade now-costs me on the average of 75 cents a year for the fix.
Now Dr's will tell their patents "Oh don't do this" I believe if it's a cheap fix why would they even go down that road.
I love peppers-but peppers don't love me-so after a decade even a little red pepper in a sauce will put me on the mend for a few months. Note to self-live without peppers.

Just met a neighbour that suffers from Meniere's disease, has a heck of a time at different times. She says I feel like a ol'drunk walking around somedays.

I suffer from tinnitus to a certain degree-(explosion)-so certain times it's just a ringing louder than what I care for, the background is the front stage noise.
Though you mentioned the salt and I will give it a serious thought if it's the cause, as salt is consumed in the diet, I'm not a high sodium kind of guy most days.

My condolences to your friend, and tell her not to feel bad about
the dizzy days..she's not alone. Never yet met a hallway wall I couldn't
bump into..:laughing7:

The salt, for me, takes what's an already irritating racket in my head and
increases the volume to "Ludicrous Loud"..it stays loud for an hour or two,
then slowly drops back to just being irritating.

Pizza, one of humanities primary food groups, is the absolute worst.. scream.gif

We do an organic frozen wood oven pizza from Italy. I'm going to check on the sodium content of the product as Friday is pizza night with a salad.
The ringing is elevated at times I'm a tugging on the ear lobe, kind of takes over the thinking on the quiet.
A bang-high pitched utensil on a plate can set it off also. Earplugs are my BBF in life.
