Señor Crow-
You said the pictures are from the underground vault and that we can visit the gold museum in Peru: are they one in the same or two separate entities? And, can you say which family owns the vault or is that privileged information? I completely understand if you can't speak about certain facts.

Thank you in advance, and thank you for your constant ability to amaze in the info you write here on TNet. Don Jose is NOT the only individual who needs to be in the process of writing a book! Either way, I hope you've kept excellent records of each & every legend, myth, or fact you've come across in your travels. Not so much for the financial gain but, more over, the historical significance of each tale: THIS is the reason for a book!!

All the best-

JAA There is an historic arms museum with suits of Spanish Armour and 19th century weapons and Japanese Armour above and the underground vault is where the gold artifacts have been kept. This gold museum is different from the government archeological museum which is in another suburb. It has been much renovated since I was there. Many foreign tourists now visit the museam. But few realise this is the possession of one particular family in Peru. They had a long line of presidents in the famly. At the time I was there the Peruvians nick name for them is the president factory. This is a private gold collection of artifacts are in permanent display open for tourists. Property, treasure and buildings are privately owned by one of wealthiest famlies in Peru.

The pictures you see are in underground vault below. As for the name of family that was about 16 years ago I was last there. I have actually forgotten, It is no great secret but I do remember they had a bit of ruthless street reputation of getting what they want.

Gotcha Señor Crow. I'd imagined some simple research online will reveal their name.
Thanks for the response!

Crow-
Interestingly, I was just searching the net for info on the gold museum and came across an incredible article published in Forbes Magazine, publication date- 1/9/2002, the title being "Fakes in Peru's Gold Museum"! According to the article, of 4349 pieces analyzed, 4237 have been found to be fakes, while another 100 are under suspicion. Apparently they've always been assumed fakes, at least within the archeological community. As far back as '86, specialists had expressed concern over the authenticity of an exhibit involving the golden artifacts.

This doesn't necessarily make them fakes in my opinion. We all know there are times when "professionals" tend to give reports that may help THEIR concerns, not another's.

By the way, the name of the family, in this case the individual who's collection the gold belonged to: Miguel Mujica Gallo (who passed away 4 days before the Cultural Commission took up the case as to the authenticity of the pieces).

Cheers-
J.A.

Thanks JAA

Ah yes the Gallo Family. I could imagine there is bad blood between Archeologists of Peruvian national museum that have are in competition for the tourist buck when more go to Gold museum than the national museum?

It did not know he Miguel had passed away I met his grandson years ago. If they are fakes they have a pretty good alarm system and security?
