Try searching at http://www.davidrumsey.com/ . They have the biggest collection of older maps that I have found. It is very easy to zoom in very close without losing resolution.

I know you are looking for old maps but thought that this one might help you compare the old and new. It's one of the few books that's almost completely online at google books. I'm still looking for old maps.

This may be the motherlode for you. http://www.sharlot.org/archives/maps/index.html
Click anywhere on the map and it brings up a list of old maps that you can view.

One last note. If you find something promising on the sharlot.org site (or any other site for that matter), search for that particular map on davidrumsey. Most likely it is there too. Then you will have the ability to zoom in.
