Here's another source that says that the road crossed at a ford on the Buttahatchee in modern day Hamilton and references the toll gate on the military road as being established "just south of the rear entrance to today's Econo Lodge Inn"---it looks like the Marion County Historical Society might be a good place to talk to people.
Interesting stuff here: the 8th map from the top "Map of the Country Belonging to the Cherokee and Creek...1820" shows Indian trails between villages and some of Jackson's routes.
The 7th map from the top shows locations of burnt villages etc.
