They are in great shape too! I think the slags must be softer or more fragile than regular glass, since they always seem to be so beat up. Nice "9s" on those MF Christensens.

I have to disagree on the delicate view
Slags are STURDY !
Dense glass with a LOT of impurities.
Of all of the damaged marbles I have, hundreds, maybe 7 are slags with the MOST damaged being Akro corks (popularity and massive use would be the guess) and Vitro all reds (Cheap glass). I say cheap because my elites, nearly 400 so far...none are below NM+ condition.
THink about germans, frosted,chipped, some with cracks and all 130yrs old...STURDY !
I think slags are the SECOND most resilient of the glass marbles )

Most of the akro slags I get are beat to heck. Pieces fall off as they roll around. I rarely get one in minty condition. MFC and Peltier slags seem to be a bit stronger, but still usually have little bites taken out all over them. I never tried to test them to see if they are weaker, and maybe it's just coincidence, but my experience has been different.

I thinks just a "thing".
I have hundreds of mint slags purchased in lots,blindly, on the bay. I would think it is hit or miss as I am not what you would call a person of great luck

Those are all NM+/M

I went through my beater box and the bulk are actually Akros with vitros being second and followed by MKs. Germans and Slags are the least number of beaters I have
Maybe it's a coin toss. Maybe my next 10 purcahse will be hammered and yours mint, who knows.

Thanks, the Reds are either Akro or Peltier. MF Christensen didn't make Red Slags. I think the Slags made from vaseline type glass are more fragile as they are almost always damaged.

I didn't know that. After some reading, I see they found no red slag glass while digging the site, leading to that conclusion. That's what I like about marbles, always something new to learn. If those were amber or blue, they would probably easily be attributed to MFC with those 9's on them. They look like they're on top though, unlike most of the MFCs I've seen, so maybe not.

I've never found a peach or vaseline slag in 100% mint condition.

I thought a couple could be Peltier as Peltier handgathered Slags early on. Always thought the red they used was a bit darker. Kinda like the one on the right. The two center Slags are Akro I'm pretty sure.

No ,all the red are Akro
And I see 1 pelt in the green, MAYBE 2, others are Akro as well. The darker one MAYBE CAC but need more than 1 view to determine
Pelts are SIMPLE to segregate from others

If you research you will see Peltiers early history before the feathered types you show. Reds were also made by Christensen (seamed and hand gathered as well) Not many folks know about the early Peltiers.

Here are some vaselines from various makers with two being handhathered. Second pic notice the Vaseline Pelty.Third pic are what I named some years ago Beer Slags as the amber ones have that look. Gazzilions of uniform sized bubbles. Very Kool

Just wanted to say that while I know nothing about marbles and had no previous interest in them, I'm enjoying everyone's pictures of beautiful marbles!

Thanks. Here is a group of Akros. 4 are experimental and all have oxblood. The two large greens are Akro and are 1.22" and 1.28". Akro officially listed up to 1" sizes on their marbles in catalogues. Collectors know they actually made them up to 1 1/4". Akro marbles this size tend to be creased as the control on the larger marbles is not there.

Here is a shot of some Christensen Machine made type Slags (also made hand gathered types earlier) The machine made types come in single and double seam construction. These pictured showing the seam are single types.
