Wouldn't use it for nugget hunting, but if that's all you've got you might as well give it a try. ..Willy.

The ace 250 is a decent beginner coin shooter and it will likely detect gold too. however, the gold pieces arent going to be deep or small...and most nuggets you'll run into are deep and small. The ace 250 won't handle well in the mineralized ground so it cant penetrate deep enough to find the small nuggets. IF you're planning a big trip to AZ definitely upgrade bc a lot of other folks detected AZ with more accurate equipment.

But if the ace250 is all you got and AZ gold fields are around the corner it would be worth the experience.

    Moonshinner,

I'd recommend you wait until you can afford to pick-up a good nugget hunting unit, maybe second hand at a reasonable price...for instance, a GMT, GoldbugII, one of the older Whites Goldmasters, or some other suitable unit.

The unit you choose should offer manually adjustable ground balance and/or autotracking that can be turned off when over a target, a true motion all-metal mode, either a fast threshold retune or adjustable retune rate (SAT). It should be able to signal on tiny nuggets in mineralized ground; air tests don't mean anything...even if they are fun to do. If you intend to hunt iron infested tailings, you might prefer a unit with some small iron ID or disc ability whether audio or visual. Any gold hunting unit will have a DD coil as well.

While nearly any metal detector can sound off over large enough gold, the chances of a successful, enjoyable trip will be much increased by using a model designed for electronic prospecting. Most nuggets will be very small, if you are able to find any at all.

If you can wait awhile, the time can be well spent doing some research on accessible nugget hunting areas. Then your plans can materialize, with the right equipment, and knowing where you are going and what you can expect. I suggest you contact clubs/organizations in any area for more information; it may be possible to join and head out on an organized hunt rather than wandering into the desert alone and inexperienced.

If you have not done so, take a few minutes and read similar threads below regarding suitable units for nugget hunting. Good luck and HH.....Jim.
Time, oh good sweet time...where did you go?

The garrett scorpion is a great nugget detector. The ace250 is great for everything else. Use your ace250 for treasure hunting and get into prospecting with the idea of getting the scorpion some time soon and when you do get it, you will be very satisfied. Ace 250 is a great treasure hunting detector.
