Pickin' a pick

Called Royal yesterday with the intent on ordering one of
their picks, but they will be out of stock for awhile, and I
don't care to wait.

Been looking at the Apex Talon Stubby with the 24" handle,
and also the Badger LT..much lighter in weight, and has
an 18" handle.

Talon Stubby | Apex Picks

Badger LT | Apex Picks

Looked at some other manufacturers as well, but they just
don't seem to be the same quality or durability as the
Apex's.

Q: Do those of you with 18" handles on your picks feel that it's
sufficient for decent digging?

About a $20 price difference between the Talon and Badger, so
no big issue there, but what's most important is being able to
swing the thing and get the gold out!

Which would you choose?

Good morning dizzy! I got a wild hair and went to harbor freight and believe it or not they had a 16" fiberglass pick with the same pointy end on one side and flat on the other for 12 bucks and it weighs about 3 lb's Now i know when you think of harbor freight you think of crap for the most part but this thing actually looks pretty good gonna give it a shot ill post my results with it good luck!

I have the 18" badger I believe. It's the one with 3 magnets. I like the length, it's perfect for hiking. Any longer and it might just be more of a hassle to have on your hip. You could get the longer one and cut it if ya don't like it I suppose. I was thinkin of doing that then decided to just go with the 18" and it's worked out great :)

I welded up my own from a car spring. I added rare earth magnets to it. works for me! I had the parts in my shop and used them instead of throwing them out with the trash!

Google Calvin "Bunk" Bunker. He a miner/prospector and manufacturers a great pick. They are called Burro Picks, I think, Bill Southern at Nugget Shooter usually has them in stock along with Arizona Outback where Bunk teaches detecting classes. I had a great one and left it in a wash and of course it was gone when I got back to look for it.

I have one of the HF picks, and have used it quite a bit for
prospecting in both the desert and local creeks. It's a great
pick, for what it's designed for, but not what I want to pack
for digging nuggets.

Dizzy - I would buy the Badger because it is easier for me to pack on a plane. If I was not flying, it would be the Stubby. Longer handles make for easier swinging/digging. I like a heavy pick. Not so good in tight quarters, but for the majority of the places one will detect and dig, bigger is better. However, if you want to wear it on your hip and you have short legs, consider the Badger.

Hermit pick is my favorite when using the gpx4000, I carry three along most trips keep two in the truck. Apex for any deep work, also have a lightweight pick-hoe built by a friend for GB2 surface work.

After chatting with Rob Allison, I ordered the Badger Lt. The 24"
handle on the Talon Stubby would just be too long to comfortably
carry in a side holster.

Should be arriving in the next day or so, and I'm lookin' forward
to trying it soon out along some local creek banks.

I carry the hodan pro pick witha 24" handle. I carry it over my shoulder while detecting and if you want to set it down, you can stand on the pick head with the handle sticking up vertically next to your leg and dont have to bend over to recover it.

Just my humble opinion.......I have 2 picks. The Apex with 30 inch handle for digging to china with larger coils on my Minelab, and the 18'' for when using smaller coils or SDC or Gold Bug. So my suggestion is it depends on what detector/coil combination you are using. Will likely get one of Bunks picks soon as sometimes when sand is covering targets I wish for something that will move more material faster. Dennis
