Has it occured to anyone to try this metod of mine exploring?

Build a robot to go into the mine shafts for you with a metal detector attached somehow. There are various robot kits available for purchase out there. I'm sure there is a way to make this work. Besides searching for the gold it could test the mine for toxins and radioactivity as well as other dangers.
