I'm in Missoula and there isn't much negative about detecting around here, at least I haven't encountered any problems. Just use what I consider common courtesy and respect for people, their property, and their Claims.

I have even been granted permission to hunt on anothers Gold Claim because I called and asked; I even get to keep what I find.

I agree with Mark's comments...

I've never been asked to leave a park (except one that ended up being a local historic area) and never been turned down when I asked to hunt private property. State Land is off limits by law.

Schools and local parks have worked for me but 99 percent of my detecting is on private land.
