OK guys I am really getting into the civil war relic hunting thing. I have always been a coinshooter for the most part and I am now venturing into new territory for me somewhat....(I guess that happens when you start finding some relics huh guys?).........I have just purchased the official civil war military atlas online.......The county I live in has had activity in it but it was smaller skirmishes and nothing really put into history books and all. I was wondering if there are some archives or reference materials that has troop movements listed or things of that nature and stagecoach roads, old post offices etc. If anyone can suggest something along those lines I would sure appreciate it. I have tried the local library and they have nothing on local history about it......I guess maybe a county historian would be advised but I do not know where to find him or her. I live in Dickson county TN. I have also just picked up "looking for civil war campsites in rural areas" also. Does anyone have this book and if so what are your thoughts of it? I would have posted this on the Tennessee forum but I check it regulary and no one hardly goes there..........Please forgive me for posting this on the tag if some of you think it does not belong here. Thanks Tim

Looked at this last night..............No luck, Thanks though. I went to the library again today and nothing it seems to be of much help in the local history section but I did find out some places where school houses were during the civil war in this county.......There might be some good coinshooting in the future!! but, I did find out the local historians name and gave him a call........Hooked me up with another guy that is really into the civil war history in this area............Left him a message so we will see what happens, Tim

The Library of Congress American Memory site has lots of interesting stuff including letters from Lincoln's generals about troop movements and the like. Below is the full site link, but look to the right where it says "Browse Collections Containing" and click Manuscripts. You'll find lots of interesting stuff.
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/browse/

This site also looks like it might be useful (I've never used it, somebody told me about it)
Making of America - http://quod.lib.umich.edu/m/moagrp/

Additionally you can get some cool Sanborn Insurance maps at:
