I threw together a business card for me and my detecting partner the other day. The back of the card has the code of ethics. We generally hunt 18th century locations searching for colonial coins and relics. Probably don't have a use for a business card, but I thought it would be fun and you never know when you might need to hand one out.

My question is this... What would you change? (please be honest) I'd like some insight.

Not clear to me on what the charge is for...the business cards, for searching for something lost, or something else..? :icon_scratch: Also are you sure you want your phone number posted here?

Card looks nice.. :headbang:

It doesn't say charge... I was wondering what you would change. LOL... If anything, I would pay to hunt some sites around here. The phone numbers are not real numbers.

I would change the card to white with black lettering to save ink unless you are using black card stock. My card tells that I find lost items, clean beaches, etc. I see you didn't list an address which is good. Never give out your address on your card.

pjroo,
I think your cards look good! Though it would be more expensive to have printed in a black gloss or matte format like you posted, I think they would be worth the money if you're able to do it. I think it looks a whole lot classier like that...

Here's the ones I've been using.
I borrowed the basic layout from another member's THing card.
It's pretty basic, and I'm sure it could be better... but I think it looks pretty decent on manila colored card stock.

Honest... I'd drop the idea completely. If you're in the business of detecting and want to hunt my property than we'll have to come to financial terms before you get started. Perhaps you can write up a contract as well.

If I made a card to hand out for detecting it certainly would not look anything like a business card. A picture of your detecting club (if you have one) might be a way to do that. Many of the places we seek permission the land owner has no idea it's a 1700s site we're looking for. Seeing the word Colonial on your card won't really help you any, it will just give you more questions to answer.

I've been detecting for 10 years all on private propery and not once can I think of a time where a card would have helped.

PS.... But you did a good job on it. ;D

This.

I agree, and not trying to be deceptive or anything, but the more infor you give them about what you're looking for, the more they are apt to either
A. See dollar signs and start charging you, or find somebody who WILL pay them.
Or
B. Get a detector and do it themselves..

Money does disgusting things to people, and there are those who are more interested in that than those of us who value the history and the hunt as the true reward.

and, sadly, the more "professional" you look, the more apt they are to wonder how much "money" they could make themselves.

Agreed... I just threw it together for fun. Cabin fever I guess! Not sure I would ever need to actually hand out a card. I'll probably print off a few and if the need ever arises, I'll give one out. I think the most important part of the card is the code of ethics on the back. Maybe a little peace of mind for the property owner.

I'll be printing it on manila (off white) colored paper as well. It will give the card an antique look.

All I have to do is bring up the fire we helped the land owner contain until the fire dept. got there. I wonder if our asking permission to hunt is what distrated him and let the fire get out of control. ;D

Business cards are a great tool for the detectorist. One, shows some professionalism and responsibility. Two, it just might get you onto a site that otherwise would be unavailable. Three, it is a good way to promote the hobby.

very good. I think the fact that you are leaving your contact info with the land owner shows your professionalism and that you are sincere about his concerns for his property. And may also get you a call for your services in the future if he or someone he knows loses an item..good job on the card..

The business card is nothing more than you personal contact information. Handing your informaton over to a land owner shows him that you are being up front with him/her. By giving your name, telephone number and city/state, it shows that you have good intentions. I always add my email address for good measure.

I have had a few folks come up to me and ask if I had a card. Well I do now.

They always come in handy and not just for detecting. If you want to give someone your name and number just hand them one of your cards.

I keep a few cards without the email addres on it for occasions when I just want to give my name and telephone number to someone.

I like the original card but there is ONE change I would make. Substitute the word 'hobbyists' for 'specialists'. Sounds more professional.
Might garner you some extra biz.
