can you follow the root with your machine?

I've chopped through some big roots to find a good coin underneath.

You guys must have your tectors on tree root mode.
I beleive I can answer this. A lot of trees are transplanted by Parks Services and they bundle the the root balls with chicken wire. I"m not saying this is the case here but my experience is this.

Tree roots are arteries that keep the tree alive and feed it. They are mineral and iron rich, and will set off most single frequency VLF metal detectors if they are large enough. I know several newbies that killed trees in their yards because they were positive their was something in, or under the root. :occasion14:

Had it happen multiple times myself. Just something to keep in the back of your mind when beeping near trees. Still gotta dig to know, and NO it doesn't trace an entire root, just a small part.

I've had many detectors beep when you bumped the coil into the root but not as a buried target. Maybe turn down the sensitivity a bit and see if that helps.
