If it was me i would stay with the Garretts i have been using Garretts since about 1984 .... A good detector maker with good service........ Now about the MP and the Cobra you could not give me one of them....... I have never heard to much good about them........ I guess there are some that like them.... But i have been in this for over 40 years and never knew any one to use one of them.....All i know is what i have read about them....

Buy a Whites Coinmaster or Teknetics Delta or Xterra 305 or Tesoro Compadre or Silver uMax. They are within your price range. Do a little research on them and pick one.

I have the Garrett Ace 250 and just like most of the reviews I read before I bought it, it's a great detector. Love it.

If you really get the bug you may want to jump up a range and spend in the $500 - $600

I started with an ACE 250 and loved it but soon jumped to an AT PRO and now really happy

Ace 350 for a starter......I think that is a wise choice....

However...look at Minelabs...they make an excellent starter as well...Xterra 305 is a good one.
