Now I think I know the answer to my question already but I have to ask. What's the chances of a ladies ring that's plated having real diamonds. The one I found today has twenty very small clear stones along the band and the main set is about 3/16th of an inch across. Can you tell diamonds from glass w/o taking it to a jeweler?
Sure...find a flat piece of quartz, and use the ring to try and scratch it.....glass will slide off....diamonds will drag across the quartz, leaving a scratch.

I'd say low likelihood that the diamonds are real. Real diamonds are even iffy in full 10k gold, and I've had fakers in 14k too. Diamond testers are relatively cheap and a good investment because there will be lots more rings and sooner or later real diamonds.
