Newbie needs Help

Hello. I just got my detector and went out by our barn which in the old days was used to sell cows. I got lots of hits but nothing I thought was diggable except for one. I started digging and there is so much gravel and clay dirt it is hard to dig. Attached is a shot of my screen. Do you think it is worth it to keep digging?



BTW - I used the iPhone app to post this and it worked awesome!

Still digging. It's not a big hole but the gravel and clay (and little time after work) make it slow going. I can see it is a rusty something. . Stay tuned...

On my way back into the house I thought I would really like to dig something up do i tried to find something shallow an dig. Well, I think i did a pretty good job of finding and pinpointing and when I turned the dirt over a 2012 penny. Woo hoo!

It was my first ever dig and using my new detector. The pinpoint was right on but if it showed me a size I was not aware of it.

i own a at pro yes dig use the pin pointer to see how big it is and lift the coil like Bryan said.

It doesn't call out a size, but you can tell by watching when the meter first pegs all the way right (meaning you are directly over the edge of the target), to when the meter drops off (indicating the other edge of the target). Do this in both a North/South direciton, and an East/West direction, and you can estimate the size of the target.

Also if you have a pro pointer and the target is shallow you can scan the pro pointer over the target and if it beeps loud for about 2 inches length you know you have a big target, like a soda can

Looks like an industrial size washer lol. Maybe part of a tractor hitch? Good job getting it up in one piece, it looks pretty rusty.

It very well could be something to do with a tractor since its near a barn that was used for selling cows back in the day.

Another way to identify large targets is to raise your detector up and up while swinging back and forth. If it is still signaling a foot off the ground, you will know it is something big.

OK, you have to be one with your detector! In other words, you have to think like your detector 'thinks'. You should dig every target until you can get a reasonable idea of what is down there. Your detector is just guessing as to what is down there. It is programmed to detect coin size objects and bases it guess on that. Here is a tip. to determine the size of the object, move the detector in untill the LEAD edge signals. Mark the spot. Now do this from the other 3 sides. You have just outlined the object. Practice on a surface object, but the surface object will appear much bigger. Frank...

This is good to know. When I was pinpointing it was definitely larger than a coin/ring. Thank you so much for this helpful info!

Scarlett, did you figure out what that object is? Looks like it might be a ring off a split wheel rim or something like that.

Geez, I haven't dug in years because my shoulders gave out. But that thing looks like the cockpit of a jet plane. I probably don't have the brain-power to operate on of those at my age.

No, I never did. I have it hanging on the fence by our goat pen. I felt I needed to save it since it was my first find.
