The story I use when some authority " The Man " questions me about my metal detecting on public property ( usually a park or tot lot ) in a different town than my own where I really don't know what the metal detecting laws are. I tell them this story. I make sure I don't have my wedding band on and tell them I just lost my wedding band the other day while in this park area and I am trying to find it. Or my wife lost her wedding ring while we were visiting here the other day. Or while here in this " tot lot " with my grandkids ( I really don't have any ) I just lost my wedding ring and am looking for it. Works every time but you might not want to use it more than once in that town but usually they will tell you to continue and not do it anymore and will let you at least finish looking in that area. Most police are very sympathetic to the plight of a man/woman who is looking for a lost wedding ring. They don't want to look as a town who doesn't welcome visitors or treats their visitors like criminals without just cause.

Hey Tom, in case you've forgotten...according to the FMDAC...
I WILL ALWAYS CHECK FEDERAL, STATE, COUNTY AND LOCAL LAWS BEFORE SEARCHING. IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO “ KNOW THE LAW “

I WILL RESPECT PRIVATE PROPERTY AND WILL NOT ENTER PRIVATE PROPERTY WITHOUT THE OWNER’S PERMISSION. WHERE POSSIBLE, SUCH PERMISSION WILL BE IN WRITING.

I WILL TAKE CARE TO REFILL ALL HOLES AND TRY NOT TO LEAVE ANY DAMAGE.

I WILL REMOVE AND DISPOSE OF ANY AND ALL TRASH AND LITTER THAT I FIND.

I WILL APPRECIATE AND PROTECT OUR INHERITANCE OF NATURAL RESOURCES, WILDLIFE AND PRIVATE PROPERTY.

I WILL AS AN AMBASSADOR FOR THE HOBBY, USE THOUGHTFULNESS, CONSIDERATION AND COURTESY AT ALL TIMES.

I WILL WORK TO HELP BRING UNITY TO OUR HOBBY BY WORKING WITH ANY ORGANIZATION OF ANY GEOGRAPHIC AREA THAT MAY HAVE PROBLEMS THAT WILL LIMIT THEIR ABILITY TO PEACEFULLY PURSUE THE HOBBY.

I WILL LEAVE GATES AS FOUND.

I WILL BUILD FIRES IN DESIGNATED OR SAFE PLACES ONLY.

I WILL REPORT TO THE PROPER AUTHORITIES ANY INDIVIDUALS WHO ENTER AND OR REMOVE ARTIFACTS FROM FEDERAL PARKS OR STATE PRESERVES.

SO. Since you're just up the road from me, and could give a fiddlers fart about the law, why don't you and me hit the Presidio sometime? I go there several times a week to pick up paperwork and drop off lunches, visit, and I've never seen any signs about detecting, why don't you have a go there? Excuse me if I'll wait in the car. Look, I can tell you're the "alpha male" type, but guys like you give detecting a bad name by simply assuming no sign, no worries, what the heck? Guys like you are the main reason areas get banned, aside from overzealous archaeologists and fretful mothers. As to your question about my experience, it was Nags Head, NC, a state park, was asked not to detect. Nobody has ever gotten their gear taken from them for illegal detecting?

The list goes on and on and on. Look, like I said, if you want to break the law and try to play dumb, that's your business. However, what you Tom, and others like you, are giving the rest of us a bad name, and we do not approve. I've read some of your posts from earlier...ehh. You like guns? Sure, me too. However, I don't see a sign on the side of my street that says no waving guns in the air, but you do it, bye. Metal detecting is somewhat like target shooting, you have to know the law BEFORE you pull the trigger, or in my case the pinpoint. So like I said, Presidio?

I can't believe I'm debating with grown men on a public metal detecting forum about simply following the law, not only Federal, state but of the FMDAC laws. Rod Sterling, come in Rod... images.jpg

If its public land, its simple unless there is a sign that says no detecting I'm detecting it. I'm not about to go digging for a no from someone behind a desk.

So what? Is that supposed to mean you are better than others here? It sure seems that way with how you keep throwing it out there. But just for the record I have 12+ years as a full time firefighter AND an EMT and a soldier (military POLICE), and an instructor and a rescue tech. If this is game of badges, you lose.

So what! Who cares if you were all that! I am in no game. In your mind I feel like you! I personally could care less about you and anybody else with the negativity created in this thread! Besides I never ONCE said I was better than ANYONE in here! You don't like my attitude, TOO BAD! Put me on ignore then! Mean time thanks for your service!!!

;)
