My Minelab Musketeer Advantage is a VLF unit. Good for a beginner, good for a more advanced "expert". What you want to do is set yourself up for some early success. Bury some coins at various depths in your yard and get a little familiar with the unit (mark them so you can return and know what is where for future practice). "Sensitivity" does not necessarily mean depth, and the higher you set the trash eliminator the more chance you have of missing something good. To begin with, set ther "trash" low and dig stuff up so you get an idea of what the detector is telling you. Set the sensitivity by placing the unit just a hair off the ground (in a spot with no metal objects hopefully) and lifting 6" or so quickly. You want the unit set to where it is just quiet for both motionless and when moved. If you click the "Trash Eliminator" entirely off you will be able to detect iron and "relics" - old tools and a whole lot of "whatzits?" That's fun, too.

Have your parent(s) and/or legal guardian take you to a park (with permission or that is OK with detecting). Finding coins is fun no matter who or how old you are. Enjoy!

Most of the metal detectors on the market today for coin and relic hunting are VLFs which mean Very Low frequency.

Welcome to the hobby and ask a lot of questions.

Welcome to the hobby. Read all you can about metal detecting. There is a treasure hunting magazine out called Western and Eastern Treasures that is very good.

Look up field tests, reviews or something like that...But don't trust everyone what they write is not always true!
