Just received permission to detect at an old, yet active church 1842. Gravestones all over, some open space, wanted to ask for advice on where to look. The gravestones I know are off limits. Best places to look?
Where people would have hung out before and after church services. That would be around grass areas toward the front door or parking area. (maybe where they would have tied up their horse or carriage?) Any picnic areas where a church social may have been held.
?? So, are you digging these deep hits? What are you finding? Deep could mean old, but it depends on that has happened to the soil and landscaping since the item was dropped.
I didn't dig 8 inches yet, I've only been scratching the surface 4 inches max. I found a Mercury dime, an old axhead from under a big tree, Shell casings, a metal piece not sure what it is, but my biggest find was the ladle, or serving spoon, it looks pretty old. I wish I could clean it there is a small engraving on top of the handle. I found the spoon in part of where the old church used to be before it burned down.
