New Beach Scoop

Hi All, I received my new beach scoop, and I have a few questions. So far it looks quite sturdy. I was worried because of the clips, and not being 1 solid piece. We will soon find out how well it holds up. What I noticed after using the scoop for the 1st time, the signal moved. The target was falling out of the scoop. (bobby-pin and bullet shell). Did I get the wrong one? Or are they all mostly this size holes?
Also I figured out quick I should be wearing sandals in the water. It was hard using my bare feet and it hurts!

Most all scoops will catch items as small as a dime. I use
a ceramic hand scoop and pro pointer if items fall through on the first pass. Could be earring or like you say bobby pin etc. Some will line the bottom with smaller screening but I think wet sand would be hard to shake out with anything smaller than what you have------Hope this helps-IB

Be careful you do not crush the wire basket with your feet pushing on it

Without reinforcing the scoop is best designed for dry sand and a pull motion.

That is a dry sand scoop if you try to dig in wet sand or in water with it you will quickly destroy it. It is not designed to be used with your feet for digging only designed to be used in dry sand detecting....

Your scoop might work ok as a travel scoop for dry sand, but, out in the water or for every day use, you'll want something a lot stronger. I use a Stealth 720i which I think is the best available. Pretty heavy though, until your arm gets used to it. As for footwear, use some dive booties or some water shoes depending on how cold your water is.

If you use it much on wet sand you will destroy it just so you know...

Nice mod!

Modded my scoop today by adding the 40" amateur crafted handle. About $15 in parts and a 1/2 pound heavier than before.


I'm a Techie with an Engineer's ambition. Two wing nuts removed to bring it back to its original use. Cannot wait to hit the beach and try it!!

That looks really good, BigDawg. Let us know how it works out for you. I have the same scoop, and I'm planning to do a similar mod. I think I'm going to try using U-bolts. If mine holds up okay, it'll make a nice backup/loaner scoop.

As long as it is used only in dry sand it should be okay, will not last long in wet sand or in the water..

I have thought about adding one to mine.

As Treasure_Hunter said this is for dry sand only. For the dry wet and in the water you can use the RTG Beachhunter scoop. It is stronger and has a foot brace. All these two-piece handles freeze up anyway and you have a one-piece.. I think the best water Scope is the Sunspot Stealth.

Attach a good sized magnet in the bottom of the basket to catch those pesky bobby pins and other small iron junk.

Thanks GulfCoaster. Gonna try it out on Madeira Beach soon. Time for a little RnR and lots of MD'ing.

Let me know how your mod with U-Bolts works out. I actually thought about trying that first, but decided to go this route.

Hmmmm...interesting idea Frankn. I may have to add a step plate behind those wing nuts as you suggest. I see Phase II of this project in the near future!!

That looks like the RTG Model #701 aluminum sand scoop. DO NOT use it in wet sand or you will destroy it. The product description says "This sand scoop is designed for dry sand hunting only, it is not made for water hunting".

If you need a water scoop, the RTG Model #R790 stainless steel scoop is indestructible. I weigh 220 and can stand on it in hard packed wet sand.

The main reason I bought this one was due to the reviews. A few people mentioned using it in the water. but I will NOT use it in wet sand...Also Great Idea adding a magnet to bottom, even in dry sand it will help.
