Same here. 1" to around 9" for me. I also found a 2 center about 3/4" under the turf. Soil conditions will determine the depth and they can be different every few feet.

Like Chris says, I've found silver right on top of the ground, and I've found silver at 10 inches after a foot of top soil was scraped off a site.
There are many variables that can come into play like frost heave, tree roots, a big rock right below a coin...it really is limitless to why coins are where they are.

I have walked over hundreds of silvers that are too deep to get w/ my 350... Florida sand sucks. Of the 20 or so that I have rescued, all have been 8 inches or so.

Haven't found a great number of silver coins, but of the ones I have found, the average depth has been 4 to 5 inches. The most recent was a '46 rosie barely covered with dirt. Well maybe I should say....barely covered with dust, as it was found in (nearly on the surface of) an old, hard packed (for years) gravel parking lot. But again the average depth of silver coins that I have found is 4 to 5 inches.

You just gotta stop going to those loose sandy areas.. Like everyone else said it really depends on the soil conditions and the compaction.
I've found silver US coins dating from the 1960's to the 1830's here in Florida .. This 1 of my most recent standing liberty 1924 was about two inches.

But this 1942 Mercury dime was twice that

If I could find harder packed soil like there is up your way, I would.. until then, I gotta keep loving the challenge down here.

The silver I've been finding has been between 3-6 inches, but then find clad as deep or deeper. Thats weird.

We should really specify the depth.. if it's going to mean anything would have to be in undisturbed soil

I guess Average would be like 4-5"s...But as mentioned before, I too have found this on top of the ground due to erroison, etc.

But I know you are talking about a yard where nothing has really been moved around or messed with

What sucks is when you get a good signal 8"'s deep and its a damn 1982 Penny...lol For some reason, THAT is the year I always get hit with when I think i got something good

Not really. I still find 1965 quarters in my change all the time. They made a boatload of 65's when the phased out the silver. They are just real tough to find anymore with all the competition. You have to find some old virgin ground.

Yeah, disturbed ground is how you get clad at 9 inches. Someone could have dug a hole and the coin got deeper when they filled it back in. Lots of scenarios for coins to get distributed at different depths. One park I hunted had newer beer cans at 14 inches. You couldn't tell the ground had been altered but it obviously had been.
