Correct. For coin sized objects, their worthless. Heck, even something larger that you'd you'd *think* would have a "shape", like a horseshoe, can still be nothing more than a messy blotch of pixels. Thus only for larger items would it be any good. And for most hobbyist purposes, by the time it's all said and done, you might as well dig the item up with a standard detector, and simply look at it.
