WP_20160414_12_57_45_Pro.jpg Hello everyone, I am new here and also to metal detecting.
. Over the weekend while visiting a yard sale I purchased a $20 metal detector. It is a bounty hunter gold digger. Since I was knee high to a grasshopper I have always wanted to metal detect. I love history and what better way to save it then to physically dig it up.
so I get back home put fresh batteries in the machine and head to the yard to learn the machine.

I step off the stairs onto the gravel driveway and get a signal. About an inch or two down the face of an Indian was staring back at me. I pick it up and it's an 1871 penny.
Wow beginners luck right?

Literally ALL
over my yard I am finding stuff from the mid to late 1800's ox half's, about 2 dozen buckles, all sorts shapes and sizes, horse shoes, a copper ring, clay marbles, old glass bottles embossed with local names,5 clay pipes, some sort of plaque made of cast iron that says lily dale on top with maybe song words under it. And a whole bunch of buttons, I also found 2 I think military pins, and a bunch of brass skeleton keys
It's all between 2-4 inches down.

So far i have 9 Indians 14 buffalo nickels and 4 half's but they are newer from 1964

The non metal stuff I find while digging the metal stuff.

My question is should i buy a real detector and see what's in the yard or will the $20 gold digger do

Today was my first dig and first time on this website, can I add pictures of my finds somewhere?

Background on my home built 1771 was a pony express, a post office, a saloon, a brothel, then a residence. The oldest thing I could find in the home was a 1886 providence journal newspaper,

Anyway thanks for listening

so...where is it that you live...address...coordinates...whatever. just joking. seems like that one is working for you. many great finds are made with entry level detectors. the more expensive ones offer depth, discrimination and other bells and whistles. upgrading depends on you detecting goals and your budget.

Congratz on the finds you are making with a $20 detector. Once you have stopped finding stuff, you may want to look at upgrading. It will probably make the ground new again.

Congrats on the finds so far. Your detector is doing the job and upgrading will give you the choice of different size coils and maybe a screen to lie to you. Which ever "upgrade" detector you choose make sure it has ZERO motion all metal PP. As for selling your stuff, the old bottles and pipes will sell to collectors. Some of these collectors no doubt will post these finds here for a pat on the head.

Remember no matter when your home was built, the land was there long before.

You have done very well for your self. Nothing like a great start to something you have been wanting to do for a while.

You mentioned the ACE for your upgrade; have you perhaps considered something like the AT Pro. It is still cheap in price but really open you up to so much more than the ACE. I am not trying sell the ATP; I have used only my sons but I find it a great beginner machine. My self I am a very bug fan of the Minelab machines, but I am not like some of the minelab owners you may run into.

You have some very cool stuff, the pipes are killer.

Would love to but I'd have to fly. Couldn't do 15+ hours driving. Never been to Rhode Island. It'd be a great trip though.

With all the non-metallic stuff you're finding, I'd be tempted to dig and sift that site.

Like cuda said. Dig and sift it all down to a foot and when your done roll some sod over your perfectly clean tilled up soil. I bet you could fill a dump truck with all the cool finds you have there.
