Found my first buffalo today thanks to carolina tom. Was excited then he turns and find a merc smh.

That Tom, he's a character, God Bless him... Congrats on your 1st Buffalo, I can take you to where I dug my 1st one, it was about 55 miles from where I live, an old army ammo depot and testing facility.

That's the sad part I came home to clean it up to get a date and nothing, I think it worn off ;(

Shaun, going forward you might want to put the coin and some of its dirt in a pill bottle until you get home and can try to get a date off of it. the more you wipe it in the filed and let it dry the less chance to get get a date on many older coins to include Large Coppers. You will learn that many shield, V, and buffalo nickels are hard to get dates from also Standing liberty quarters and some Large Coppers.

I think if you braided the date area with a toothpick, the date might appear. Just a thought. What have you got to lose?
