Ok J...there are many answers to that question...probably the most obvious would be...did it ring up high? Or a deep, iron-ish tone...was this an old site that might produce older, deeper targets? Or a park...a yard? These are the things that all come into play when choosing targets...J, the best advice I can give you us to dig EVERYTHING right now, that is the only way you know how to match tones and signals with what is in the ground. Dig everything shallow and you will slowly become "one" with your shiny new toy. Then before you pull the trigger on a target over a foot deep, you'll know if you are digging treasure or a rusty hunk of iron. Hope this helps! Ddf

When new it is recommended that when you are new dig a ton of...everything.
That's how you learn the best and quickest.
Eventually you start matching tones and numbers to probable targets and get a little more picky.
If you dig all high targets you will find most of the coins, big cans, aluminum and other things but you will also miss a lot of great things like gold that usually comes in lower.
On this target I will give you a clue...you probably missed out on digging a deep hole to find a piece of iron but you would have learned this lesson better if you had dug it.
You are in the learning phase...dig and learn.

Make sure to do any "HUGE hole digging" in a field or your own yard. NO massive craters in parks or schools! Have fun and welcome to the hobby! When you figure out what you are really interested in going after, then you can tailor your machine to best fit those targets. But for now...learning what's what as far as response and ID go is very important,as previously stated.
