    For anyone wondering- my first metal detector was one of those old RadioShack Discovery 2000’s. (Wayyyyy back in the day.)

    Got my first detector just over 50 years ago...Name:  old.gif

    My father built it from a Heathkit kit. He built the circuit board, wrapped the coil
    on an empty 8" tape reel, and it had an on/off switch and a tuner.

    That’s awesome! I’ve never used/seen a homemade detector, but I bet it was pretty cool!

    I made my first BFO with 3 silicone transistors from children's hobby magazine Tim schematics when i was 10, some 40 yeares ago. It still must be somwhere. I was the only one with the MD on the block. The machine was capable of finding a coin some 10cm (2") deep, it was useless in the long grass. As a side effect, i was able to listen to the AM radio when i lifted the coil....

    It was one of them RadioShack models don’t remember the exact one it was the 60 dollar one I got as a child. Still have it (i think)and it prolly still works. Found plenty of iron....not much else.
