Is there a future for metal detecting?

Let's say 100 years from now...do you think people will be still searching the earth for coins and relics? Will there be any value to say a 2008 Lincoln Penny (which would be 100 years old at that point? How about a circa 2008 belt buckle?

Will there still be virgin ground to search for what we are all searching for now? CW Relics? Colonial? Will anyone still care at that point?

I am curious about what you guys think.

My personal opinion is that yes.... even after 100 more years men will still seek to find what has been lost before...
That said... none of us will be here to see it...
There will always be places that have not been hunted such as "Virgin" sites, but even today such places are few and far between.

Mostly private property....
That said, since the amount of things in the ground remaining to be found is "UNKNOWABLE" then there will
always be someone out to see if they can find a few more things after the plow has turned the soil, or construction
on a site inaccessible previously.

As for the relative value of these coins today and buckles of today, I don't think they will ever have any type of
"Collectors Value" after being found by someone like us, simply because there were so many made, the metal was
so cheap and these items are so common as to make the practically worthless regardless of age.

Romans made small coins by the millions, and you can dig them in fields all over Europe, but even though they
are 1500 to 1800 years old you can not get $1 for them because they are so so common...
and yet they are almost 2000 years old....

Remember, age and time does not make an item valuable, only its rarity or scarcity of availability....

We will all have a type of x-ray vision built into us in our DNA, and it will be superior to what we now have. . We will have no human counselors, salespeople, police people, occupations, etc, and those who resist the State will be used as either examples put on display at the State Museum for "progressive relativity objectives", or a something used as laboratory rats. We all will be completely subject to the State and there will be no elections any more, completely wiping out the democratic, republican, libertarian and working class society entirely. Professional doctors, engineers, accountants, etc will be a thing of the past. We will most of us be mindless drones, at best. And to answer easymoney's statement. There will ALWAYS be a group of humans that will fight the " machine ", from the beginning of time till there is at least 1 human being left on this planet. It's our nature, we have been fighting something since this planets been spinning and we have been on it. Will there be a company, machine or something like the sort.... maybe. Maybe the " Freedom Raiders " will have live underground and scurry like rats and eat food that they steal from the machine or corporation. Maybe will we have to alter our dna so as not to be a part of the " normal " people.Maybe we will figure a way to get some of the best minds available and figure out a way to upload a virus and bring the whole thing down!!! Oh, I'm a big future/end-of-the-world literature fan; The Stand, Waterworld, the Postman, The Day After Tomorrow, I Robot, et. al. but I'm not convinced that those are realities the creators of the films and books have somehow channeled. However, in most of America the detecting world is beginning to shut down. In much of southern Oregon, for example, MANY of the schools are gated and locked now - and some are also guarded against anything but school activities, period. Even in the central and north part of the State, etc, things are beginning to migrate that direction. Half of America wants government control on everything (socialism) , including the rearing of our children, and although Oregon beaches are public propety now, someday soon they will likely be the property of the State and completely off bounds. Many left activist interest groups have been trying to to keep us off the beaches here, and especially in the last 10 or so years. In California the case is even much worse. Liberal pro-active greenies and "environmentalists" want to take it away from us for good. Washington State and the big and beautiful Puget Sound area where I grew up is even worse than either California or Oregon in this regard. Other States are following suit. Remember to vote right for your State Senators, Governors and Congress people if you care to keep this great hobby available to us in the future, those on the far left wish to take it away from us, permanently. They did it in much (or in some cases all) of socialist Scandinavia already, didn't they?

In Britain the hobby could be gone any time now.

No detecting on National Trust land, supposed to be for the enjoyment and use of the public originally.

No detecting on Forestry Commision land (was the public land).

Farmers get grants to either farm or preserve the countryside. This gives the authorities the muscle to stop these private landowners from allowing detecting on their land.

Beach, well thats free to everyone...until now.
Latest legislation they are pushing through is that a licence will be needed for EACH beach. £20 (around $40) for a year. Now we don't have miles of beach in many areas just small bays. Start adding up the cost for each then add the fact you will only be allowed to use a hand trowel and dig to 3 or 4 inches and its not going to be worth the cost of fuel at $11+ to drive down.

No ... I have been detecting for the past 30+ years on surface and submerged lands. Seems like every year they make new rules and laws to prevent this. The only land we will be able to detect will be our own, but then again we don't really own that!

According to the Mayan calendar the world will come to an end in 2012 anyway!

OK you have my attention, so... whats the bad news?

Not to toss the idea out for someone to grab, but, you know how you aren't allowed to hunt the surf/water at or near a shipwreck site near shore in Florida? Well, watch this happen... increase the distance requirement, every shipwreck off the shore is declared "a treasure". No more surf/water hunting.

I recently went on a trip to Tennessee and I read they have some fairly hefty laws about MD'ing. Basically if you are not a full blown archaeologist, you have to stick to privately owned land (that you get permission to MD of course), with the exception of a license you can get to MD boat ramps and beaches (land only, 6" depth max IIRC) governed by the TVA.

Anyone know of a site that has MDing laws state by state?
