I've used explorers since 2000 and have always used my gain at 10 and wouldn't ever consider dropping it.

Start at the preset and go from there as different parts of the country can handle more or less. What works for Billy Bob might be to much gain for Vadimire.

I had a X-1 probe on my Explorer and at max setting of 10 the probe when set with the pinpoint mode was not as precise (dead on). I had it set at 7 and could tell the deeper coins by the volume and worked good when using the probe.

I use deep too. If you start at 10 and get used to it, it's a great advantage. I can still tell deeper targets but doesn't really matter because where I detect I dig all non ferrous sounds. Whether it's a 2" coin, or a 12" inch one, the depth has nothing to do with the age it will be.
