spending 1st anvin montana in late may, need some tips on good spots

So for our 1st wedding aniversary we decided to head down to montana and look for saphires close to philipsburg. I am a newbie to metal detcting but am hooked due to some silver i found on vancouver island on our honey moon(my first detector form canadain tire). How romatic right? mining and metal detecting......Her parents have spent some time down in that area and say its fantastic. So any hints on posible spots? I did find a 1949 road atlas with some towns on it that are not on the new 2008 road atlas. So a few maybe ghost towns are on our list,if nothing else, gas is cheaper in the states and i am looking forward to the drive, I hear it beautiful there. Thanks for any responses I get, we look forward to camping down there.
